205 Downloads

According to my server logs we've had 205 downloads of VelOCRaptor (that weren't me checking its OK).

Come on people - you've had a play, where's the feedback?

  1. Wow!

Great initiative! I had been trying to tame Tesseract for a while, without much success, when I came across VelOCRaptor. Which does just what I needed. Thanx a lot.

You did, however, want some feedback, so I'll share my wishlist with you:

    - A spelling menu / Language setting.
I use CocoAspell, which integrates with OSX' native spelling tools. It was set to spell check in Norwegian, but the text I wanted recognized was in English, so I got a mess of English words "corrected" into Norwegian.

It was easy enough to fix: I opened another Cocoa app, changed the Language settings there, went back to VelOCRaptor and processed the image again. But it would be good to be able to set the language in the app.

    – Wrap option
An option to preserve or remove line breaks would be great. Especially if it could still recognize indents, double line breaks and other white space as paragraphs.

    - A sexier icon ;-)
Not really a big deal, but your dinosaur is cute as a logo on the website; not so much in my dock. Maybe there's an icon designer out there that can help you?

    – Option: Check for updates

    – Open the result in a different window/tab
… to make it easier to drop the next image into the app.

    – Improved punctuation
(This wish is probably a low priority compared to the amount of work required, but:) VelOCRaptor sometimes has trouble with punctuation. Periods and commas are usually handled well, but quotation marks, dashes and hyphens sometimes result in confusion. It would be especially nice with a special rule for a combination of Hyphen & Line Break.
(Maybe it's possible to add an option to restrict the reading to certain basic characters. After all, there are hundred of special characters, of which only a handful are common.)

Regardless of all wishes, however, I am very grateful for this app. Keep up the good work! :-)

  2. Hi Christian, thanks for the great feedback.

    I've some thoughts inline

    - A spelling menu / Language setting.

Frankly I hadn't considered this problem, and I'm grateful that you've bought it up. I think that it should disappear as a problem soon if we improve our recognition accuracy so that we don't have to do the dictionary hack.

    – Wrap option

I'm a little stuck here. In order to make the text line up with the PDF, I basically just position it where the underlying word was found. What you then get by copying from the PDF is up to Preview (or Reader). We should be smarter though, and I do expect this to improve soon.

    - A sexier icon ;-)

Awwww, I was rather proud of her, although she was drawn by my friend Toni Goffe (tonigoffe.com) and I only did the colouring-in. Actually we do have a graphic designer who wants to get his teeth into the product, so that may change.

    – Option: Check for updates

Definitely on the list for before release.

    – Open the result in a different window/tab

The whole drop workflow is being reviewed at the moment. It's very much experimental, but we know that we need a drop target available always.

    – Improved punctuation
I'm hopeful for progress in this area.

Thank you for taking the time to provide detailed feedback. I'm going to post some of your suggestions on http://velocraptor.uservoice.com so that others can have their say.

    Cheers

    Duncan
